The Fortezza of Rethymno is a 16th-century Venetian citadel located in the city of Rethymno, Crete. Built in 1573, the fortress was designed to project Venetian power in the eastern Mediterranean until its capture by Ottoman forces in 1646. In the early 20th century, residential structures filled much of the fortified space, but these were removed after World War II, leaving only a handful of historic buildings standing within the walls. Now preserved as an archaeological site and open to visitors, the Fortezza remains substantially intact and continues to dominate the Rethymno landscape.
