Constructed in 1834 on the North Sea coast near Egmond aan Zee in Bergen, North Holland, the J.C.J. van Speijk Lighthouse is a brick tower standing 28 meters high. One of two lighthouses built in 1833 to navigate treacherous waters off the coast, it was designed with a practical color scheme: red on its northside to warn mariners of dangerous shallows, and white on the south to signal when vessels had cleared the hazard. The lighthouse's tomb-shaped foundation serves as the official Dutch memorial to Jan van Speyk, a national hero. Its southern companion on the Torensduin was deactivated in 1891 and demolished in 1915, but the north tower survives as a designated Rijksmonument.
