The Vuurbaak van Katwijk aan Zee, a brick tower lighthouse built in 1605 in Katwijk aan Zee, South Holland, stands as the second oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands, preceded only by the Brandaris of 1594. Rising twelve metres tall, it originally served the local herring fisheries by displaying an open fire visible to Katwijker vessels operating off the English coast. In the mid-nineteenth century, the beacon transitioned to an oil lamp as fishing practices evolved. The structure fell inactive by the early 1900s as the fishing industry declined, and today it remains a designated Rijksmonument.
