The Kelly Field Historic District in southwestern San Antonio preserves the center portion of a major military aviation facility established in 1917 as a World War I pilot training camp. Comprising 58 contributing and non-contributing buildings arranged in Moderne style within defined boundaries on the former base, the district documents the evolution of American military aviation infrastructure across the twentieth century. The site gained historical significance as the location where Charles Lindbergh earned his pilot's wings in 1925, graduating first in his class from the Air Service Advanced Flying School. Following expansion authorized in 1926, the facility developed into a permanent training center and, by World War II, became the largest maintenance and supply depot in the United States. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, recognizing its architectural and historical importance to military aviation history.
