Opened in 1984, the Kielce Bus Station in Kielce, Poland represents a striking example of novelty architecture, designed to resemble a UFO. Its circular main building with a dome sits at the center of a large 89-meter-diameter roundabout that accommodates 15 bus platforms, each 18 meters long—the maximum legal length for buses in Poland and most of Europe. An additional island platform provides 3 extra bays and enables night-time operations when the main facility is closed. Two tunnels beneath the roundabout connect the central building to the platforms, a design innovation that eliminates conflicts between pedestrian and bus traffic. When it opened, the station was recognized as one of Poland's more modern bus stations of its era.
