The Kreischer House, a historic mansion in Charleston, Staten Island, was built around 1885 by German immigrant Balthasar Kreischer for his son Edward. This substantial Queen Anne-style residence exemplifies the exuberant aesthetic of the period through its asymmetrical 2½-story wood-frame construction, spacious verandas, decorative gables with jigsaw bargeboards, ornamental railings, posts and brackets, tall chimneys, and a distinctive corner tower. One of two mansions Kreischer commissioned for his sons—the other built for Charles no longer stands—the surviving house demonstrates both the architect's prosperity and the architectural fashions favored by wealthy nineteenth-century Staten Island residents. It was designated a New York City Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
