Located in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, the Lakshana Devi Temple in Bharmour is among India's oldest surviving wooden temples, dating to the second half of the 7th century in the post-Gupta era. Dedicated to Durga in her Mahishasura-mardini form, it stands as the oldest surviving structure of Bharmour, the former capital. Though its roof and walls have required repairs over centuries, lending it a hut-like appearance, the temple preserves intricate wooden carvings of exceptional artistry reflecting late Gupta style. The sanctuary houses a brass statue of the goddess inscribed with a late Gupta script, while the carved wooden entrance, interior, and ceiling feature motifs and themes from both Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Designated a Monument of National Importance, it represents a remarkable survival of early Hindu temple architecture and craftsmanship.
