Lalehzar Street is one of Tehran's oldest thoroughfares, running between Toopkhaneh Square to the south and Enqelab Street to the north in District 12. Built during the transition from the Qajar to Pahlavi era, it became synonymous with Iranian modernism and was dubbed "Tehran's Champs-Élysées" for its concentration of theaters, cinemas, restaurants, cabarets, and fashionable shops. The street hosted Iran's first passage designed in Western architectural style and witnessed several national firsts, including the inaugural screening of an Iranian film at the Laleh cinema—inaugurated in 1945 on the site of the former Mosafa royal garden—and the installation of Tehran's first telegraph wire. By concentrating the city's entire cinema industry, Lalehzar embodied the cultural and technological aspirations of early-twentieth-century Iran.
