The University of Tehran, Iran's oldest and most prominent university, occupies a central campus in Tehran's District 6 alongside several satellite locations throughout the city. Designed by French architect André Godard and built beginning in 1934, the institution exemplifies Pahlavi modernism through its concrete construction and distinctive main gate on Enghelab Street, which has become the university's iconic logo. Known as the "Mother University," it absorbed departments from earlier institutions including the Dar al-Funun (established 1851) and the Tehran School of Political Sciences (1899), and now offers over 111 bachelor's, 177 master's, and 156 doctoral programs. Recognized as both an Iranian National Heritage site and a Tentative World Heritage Site, the university stands as the premier research institution among OIC countries and admits only the top one percent of applicants passing the national entrance examination.
