The Latchis Hotel and Theatre, completed in 1938 in Brattleboro, Vermont, is a striking Art Deco structure designed by architect S. Wesley Haynes. Built as a memorial to Demetrius P. Latchis, a Greek immigrant and theatre magnate who operated fourteen cinemas across New England, the building was commissioned by his sons and originally named the Latchis Memorial Building. The multipurpose complex was designed to house a hotel, theatre, ballroom, restaurant, bar, and commercial spaces. Its lavish interiors feature murals and artwork depicting Greek mythology, created by Hungarian muralist Lajos Jámbor, as well as distinctive terrazzo flooring. One of only two surviving Art Deco buildings in Vermont, the structure thrived through the 1960s before declining in the following decade. After revitalization in 1985, it was acquired in 2003 by the Brattleboro Arts Initiative, a local nonprofit, for $1.3 million in combined local and federal funding. The building sustained significant damage during Hurricane Irene in 2011 but reopened that year and underwent further restoration in 2013 following a half-million-dollar fundraising campaign.
