Leipzig's Südfriedhof, or South Cemetery, is a monumental 82-hectare burial ground established in 1886 in the southern reaches of the city, adjacent to the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. Designed in the Art Nouveau style, it ranks among Germany's largest rural cemeteries, comparable in scale to Hamburg's Ohlsdorf and Berlin's Stahnsdorf South-Western Cemetery. Recognized as a heritage monument in Saxony, the Südfriedhof exemplifies the grand civic cemeteries that characterized late-nineteenth-century urban planning and architectural ambition.
