Les Halles was Paris's central fresh food market in the 1st arrondissement, designed by architect Victor Baltard. The iconic market operated until 12 January 1973, when it was replaced by an underground shopping centre and park. That modernist complex was itself demolished in 2010 and succeeded by the Westfield Forum des Halles, a contemporary shopping mall built largely underground and crowned by an undulating 2.5-hectare canopy. Directly connected to the Châtelet–Les Halles transit hub—Paris's busiest métro and RER station—the mall attracts approximately 50 million visitors annually, making it France's busiest shopping centre as of 2019.
