The Hôtel des Invalides, a sprawling classical and baroque complex in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, began construction in 1671 under architects Libéral Bruant and Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Originally built as a hospital and retirement home for wounded soldiers, the compound now houses the Musée de l'Armée, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine, chronicling French military history. The complex centers on the Cathedral of Saint-Louis-des-Invalides, the military's national cathedral, and is crowned by the Dôme des Invalides—a soaring chapel standing 107 metres tall, making it Paris's tallest church building. The Dôme has been transformed into a shrine honoring France's greatest military leaders, including Napoleon, whose tomb stands within.
