The Liberty Building, a 12-story Chicago School commercial structure completed in 1923, anchors the southwest corner of 6th Avenue and Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines. Designed by the prominent local firm Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson, the 174-foot-tall building originally housed Bankers Life Insurance and WHO Radio, establishing itself as a downtown landmark. The structure combines retail, office, and residential spaces throughout its height. A comprehensive 2008 rehabilitation by Nelson Construction and K.C. Holdings, designed by Shiffler Associates Architects, modernized the interior while preserving its historic character. Today the building contains a Hyatt Place Hotel and residential condos, along with ground-floor retail and service spaces, and connects to Des Moines's downtown Skywalk system. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
