Designed by César Pelli & Associates and completed in 1987, 225 Liberty Street is a 44-story, 645-foot postmodern office tower in Battery Park City, part of the Brookfield Place complex adjacent to Lower Manhattan's Financial District. Originally called Two World Financial Center, the building contains over 2.4 million square feet of office space and houses major financial and media companies including BNY Mellon, State Street, and Dotdash Meredith. A defining feature is its connection to the Winter Garden, a dramatic public atrium with a 120-foot vaulted glass-and-steel ceiling and sixteen twelve-meter palms from the Mojave Desert. The tower sustained severe damage from debris during the September 11 attacks and remained closed for repairs until May 2002, reopening as a reconstructed commercial anchor within the revitalized waterfront district.
