Situated on Staten Island's North Shore in the Tompkinsville neighborhood, the Lyons Pool Recreation Center is a 3.2-acre public swimming complex that opened on July 7, 1936, as part of a Works Progress Administration initiative. Designed by architect Joseph L. Hautman, the facility comprises a general swimming pool alongside smaller diving and wading pools, all served by a one-story brick bathhouse rendered in the Art Moderne style. The bathhouse, which extends in an L shape along the pool, contains separate wings for men's and women's facilities connected by a rotunda lobby. Extensively renovated between 1984 and 1986, the complex was designated a New York City Landmark in 2008. Today it remains the only WPA-era pool constructed on Staten Island, maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
