Malbork Castle, located in the Polish town of Malbork, is the world's largest castle by land area and a masterwork of Brick Gothic architecture. Built by the Teutonic Order beginning in the 13th century and significantly expanded in the 14th, the fortress was constructed over approximately 132 years between 1274 and 1406, emerging as the world's largest brick castle upon completion. Originally named Marienburg in honour of Mary, the castle served as an Ordensburg fortress until 1457, when Polish mercenaries sold it to King Casimir IV of Poland during the Thirteen Years' War. It subsequently functioned as a Polish royal residence and seat of state institutions until the First Partition of Poland in 1772, after which it passed under German control for over 170 years until 1945, gradually deteriorating as military technology rendered it obsolete. UNESCO inscribed the castle as a World Heritage Site in December 1997, and Poland designated it a national Historic Monument in 1994.
