Mamilla Mall, designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie and developed by Alrov Properties and Lodgings Ltd., is West Jerusalem's only open-air shopping destination, located northwest of Jaffa Gate. Completed in stages between 2007 and 2008, the mall features a 2,000-foot pedestrian promenade—Alrov Mamilla Avenue—lined with 140 stores, restaurants, and cafes, with office space above. Built atop a multi-story parking garage accommodating 1,600 vehicles and a bus terminal, the development respectfully incorporates the facades of 19th-century buildings from the original Mamilla Street alongside preserved structures including the Convent of St. Vincent de Paul, the Stern House, and the Clark House. Part of the larger $400 million Alrov Mamilla Quarter mixed-use development that includes luxury condominiums, hotels, and additional amenities, the mall's realization came only after decades of delay stemming from preservationist, environmentalist, and religious opposition, as well as protracted legal disputes—thirty-seven years after its initial proposal in the early 1970s.
