The David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, originally completed in 1914 at 1 Centre Street in Manhattan's Civic Center, is a 40-story, 580-foot structure designed by McKim, Mead & White to house expanded governmental functions following the city's 1898 consolidation of five boroughs. Built between 1909 and 1914 at a cost of $12 million, it was among the final major buildings of New York's City Beautiful movement and represents one of the world's largest governmental buildings, containing approximately 1 million square feet of office space. The firm's design draws from Roman Imperial, Italian Renaissance, French Renaissance, and Beaux-Arts traditions; its base incorporates a subway station while its crown features the gilded Civic Fame statue. The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1966 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It underwent significant renovations in the 1930s, mid-1970s, and late 1980s before being renamed in 2015 to honor David N. Dinkins, the city's first African-American mayor.
