Marseille Cathedral, formally the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure, stands in the 2nd arrondissement of Marseille as a striking synthesis of revival styles. Begun in 1852 under architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu, the cathedral blends Byzantine, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Islamic architectural influences. Designated a minor basilica in 1896 and elevated to serve as the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille in 1948, it ranks among France's national monuments and is protected as a classified historical monument.
