The Matitone, a postmodern office tower in Genoa's San Teodoro district, rises 109 meters across 26 floors and has been Italy's Ligurian capital's tallest building since its completion in 1992. Designed by the renowned American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with Italian architects Mario Lanata and Andrea Messina, the tower was constructed between 1987 and 1990 and officially inaugurated in 1992. Its popular nickname, meaning "big pencil," reflects its slender, elongated form. Originally known as the San Benigno North Tower, the building now functions as a business center.
