The Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation, located underground on Île de la Cité behind Notre-Dame in Paris's 4th arrondissement, commemorates the 200,000 people deported from Vichy France to Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Designed by French modernist architect Georges-Henri Pingusson and inaugurated by Charles de Gaulle in 1962, the memorial exemplifies brutalist architecture and occupies the site of a former morgue. Now classified as a historical monument and recognized as part of France's twentieth-century heritage, it stands as a solemn place of national remembrance.
