Located in the Bercy district of Paris's 12th arrondissement, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance building is a sprawling postmodern complex designed by architects Paul Chemetov, Borja Huidobro, Louis Arretche, and Roman Karasinsky. Built between 1984 and 1989 as part of President François Mitterrand's Grands Travaux, the 45-meter-tall compound comprises multiple structures named after notable French statesmen—Colbert, Necker, Sully, Turgot, and Vauban—alongside a separate convention centre. The complex boldly straddles two major roads and adjoins the Gare de Lyon, with its southern section opening onto the Seine via a port. True to postmodern principles, the building draws architectural inspiration from historical forms, featuring a viaduct-like profile, a dry moat, and a ceremonial bronze gate. Often described as a "citadel" or "fortress," it occupies a substantial footprint that includes a heliport (no longer operational). The ministry relocated here from the Richelieu Wing of the Louvre, which it had occupied since 1871.
