Designed by Ahmed Hussain Agha and completed in 1927, the Mohatta Palace stands in Clifton, Karachi's affluent seaside suburb, as a masterwork of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Built as the summer residence of Shivratan Mohatta, a Hindu Marwari businessman from Rajasthan, the palace draws on the stone palace traditions of his native region, constructed with distinctive pink Jodhpur stone combined with local yellow Gizri stone. Mohatta occupied the residence for roughly two decades before the partition of India prompted his departure to the newly formed Indian state, leaving behind a remarkable architectural hybrid that now serves as a museum.
