The Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, located in Kastoria Municipality in northern Greece, is a Byzantine structure built around 1082 on ground hallowed by military victory. According to tradition, Emperor Alexios I Komnenos commissioned the monastery to commemorate the successful defense of the region, when Byzantine commander George Palaiologos encircled Norman attackers there in 1083. The monastery stands as one of the earliest of the seventy-two churches and chapels that ring the nearby lake of Kastoria, representing an important strand in the rich ecclesiastical architecture of the region.
