The Mosque of Rome, designed by Paolo Portoghesi and completed in 1995, is the largest mosque in the Western world, encompassing 30,000 square metres in the Acqua Acetosa area of Parioli, north of the city. Built in the postmodern architectural style, the structure can accommodate more than 12,000 worshipers and serves as the seat of the Italian Islamic Cultural Centre. Beyond its primary function as a Friday mosque, it operates as a comprehensive community hub, hosting teachings, exhibitions, conventions, wedding ceremonies, and funeral services, serving as a vital gathering place for Muslims across Italy despite its location in a relatively sparse Muslim population area.
