The Muhammad Ali Mosque, located within the Citadel of Cairo, is a prominent Ottoman-style structure commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha and completed between 1832 and 1857. Distinguished by its dramatic skyline presence overlooking the city, it represents a deliberate departure from traditional Cairene architecture, instead embracing Ottoman and European influences throughout its design. The mosque is popularly known as the Alabaster Mosque for its striking use of alabaster as wall cladding, a material choice that further distinguishes it from earlier monuments in the region.
