Completed in 1912, the Al-Rifa'i Mosque stands in Citadel Square in Islamic Cairo, adjacent to the Citadel and opposite the medieval Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan (c. 1361). Designed as an architectural complement to its venerable neighbor, the mosque exemplifies 19th-century Egyptian ambitions to reconnect with earlier Islamic glory while modernizing the cityscape. Beyond its function as a place of worship, it serves as the royal mausoleum of Muhammad Ali's family and houses the tomb of Ali Abu Shubbak, from whom its name derives. The structure represents Islamic architectural tradition adapted to its historical moment and imperial purpose.
