Naumkeag, a 44-room Shingle Style villa in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, was designed by Stanford White of the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White and constructed in 1885–1886 as the country estate of prominent New York lawyer Joseph Hodges Choate and his wife Caroline Dutcher Sterling Choate. The estate gained additional distinction for its expansive gardens, designed in the mid-twentieth century by landscape architect Fletcher Steele in collaboration with Mabel Choate. Now designated a National Historic Landmark and operated as a nonprofit museum by The Trustees of Reservations, Naumkeag exemplifies the gilded-age aesthetic of the Berkshires' cultural landscape.
