The New Synagogue in Dresden's old town stands on the site of the Semper Synagogue, designed by Gottfried Semper in 1839–1840 and destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938. Completed in 2001, the contemporary structure was designed by architects Rena Wandel-Hoefer and Wolfgang Lorch, representing modern architecture's response to this fraught historical location. The building serves as both a functioning Jewish congregation and a memorial to the community displaced by Nazi persecution.
