The Nikolaikirche in Berlin's Mitte district is the oldest church in the city, constructed between 1220 and 1230 in brick Gothic style. Rising to 84.4 meters, this monumental structure was designed by Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein and originally served as a place of worship before later functioning as a music venue and history museum. Built from brick, the church anchored the Nikolaiviertel (Nicholas quarter), a medieval district bounded by the Spree River, Spandauer Straße, Rathausstraße, and Mühlendamm that would be restored in later centuries, some sections as recent reconstructions. The building was destroyed in 1944 and has been recognized as both a cultural heritage monument and an architectural heritage monument in Berlin.
