Completed in 1996, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum is a striking modernist landmark designed by Oscar Niemeyer with structural engineer Bruno Contarini. The cylindrical structure stands 16 meters high with a cupola 50 meters in diameter spanning three floors, projecting dramatically over Boa Viagem beach from a cliffside site. A reflecting pool of 817 square meters surrounds the building's base "like a flower," in Niemeyer's conception, while a wide access slope leads to a hall accommodating sixty visitors. The saucer-shaped form, which has invited comparison to a UFO, offers viewing galleries overlooking Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain. The museum houses the João Sattamini collection of 1,217 works assembled since the 1950s, constituting Brazil's second-largest collection of contemporary art. Recognized as a heritage asset by IPHAN, the building stands as one of Niterói's principal landmarks.
