The Nizamiye Masjid, a Sunni mosque completed in 2012 in Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa, is often described as the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. Designed in Ottoman architectural style, the building's plans originated in Turkey but were adapted to South African building standards by a local architect. Set within a 10-hectare site, the mosque itself occupies less than two-thirds of a hectare. Construction commenced in October 2009 and concluded three years later.
