Olana State Historic Site, near Hudson in Greenport, New York, is the mansion and estate of Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), a leading figure of the Hudson River School landscape painters. Designed by Church himself in consultation with architect Calvert Vaux and constructed beginning in 1872, the villa is a masterwork of Orientalist architecture, blending Moroccan, Persian, and Moorish Revival styles in stone, brick, and polychrome-stenciled surfaces. Church and his wife Isabel named the estate after an ancient Persian fortress-treasure house that similarly commanded a river valley; here, Olana overlooks the Hudson River, the Catskills, and the Taconic Range. The residence is one of the few intact American artists' home-, studio-, and estate-complexes; its intricately stenciled interiors—featuring designs Church derived from his Middle Eastern travels—retain their original exotic furnishings, objects from his global journeys, and approximately 40 paintings by Church and his contemporaries. A final studio, added from 1888 to 1890, sits as Church's last workspace. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965, Olana is now a museum operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
