Completed in 1903–1904 by architect Robert Reamer, the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, stands at 7,350 feet elevation as one of the finest examples of National Park Service Rustic architecture and the largest log hotel in the world. Its defining features—a multi-story log and limb lobby, massive 85-foot stone fireplace weighing approximately 500 short tons, and flanking frame wings for guest rooms—were constructed largely from locally obtained lodgepole pine and rhyolite stone. When it opened in spring 1904, the inn was notably equipped with electric lights and steam heat, making it the first of the great park lodges of the American West. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and ranked 36th among America's favorite buildings by the American Institute of Architects in 2007, the inn remains a rare surviving example of the Golden Age of rustic resort architecture.
