Designed by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and completed in 1927, the Old Parliament House in New Delhi served as India's premier legislative chamber for nearly seven decades. Originally opened as the seat of the Imperial Legislative Council, it transitioned following Indian independence in 1947 to house the Constituent Assembly, and then became Parliament's home when India adopted its Constitution on 26 January 1950. The building accommodated both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—the lower and upper houses of India's bicameral parliament—until a new Parliament House replaced it in May 2023. Recognized as a Grade I heritage structure by the New Delhi Municipal Council, the building stands as a significant monument to India's democratic institutions and the architectural legacy of the British Raj's final major civic project.
