The Houses of Parliament in Cape Town serves as the seat of South Africa's national legislature and comprises three distinct structures built across different eras. The original 1884 building, designed by architect Herbert Baker in Cape Dutch and Neoclassical styles, now functions as the National Council of Provinces building. It was joined by the Old Assembly building in 1910 and the National Assembly building constructed between 1983 and 1985. The complex suffered substantial fire damage in January 2022, after which major renovation work began on the Old Assembly and National Assembly buildings as part of a R 4.6 billion project aimed at modernizing the site while preserving its heritage, with completion anticipated in December 2026. Since 2014, the buildings have held Grade 1 heritage status, South Africa's highest level of protection, as designated by the South African Heritage Resources Agency.
