The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei's capital, is one of the largest and most striking mosques in the Far East, completed in 1958 at a cost of US$5 million. Built by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the structure stands 52 meters high and is distinguished by its iconic gold dome that dominates the city's skyline. Its design draws significantly from Mughal architectural traditions. Situated dramatically in a man-made lagoon with a ceremonial stone barge, the mosque features an interior adorned with Saudi Arabian rugs and walls of Italian marble. As one of Brunei's two state mosques, it serves as both an active place of worship and one of the country's most photographed landmarks, attracting visitors worldwide.
