Dortmund's opera house is a modernist structure completed in 1966, designed by architects Heinrich Rosskotten and Edgar Tritthart to replace an earlier facility from 1904 that was destroyed during World War II. Built on the former site of the Old Synagogue, which the Nazi local government demolished in the 1930s, the building embodies a functional design philosophy that separates the stage and technical areas in the Bühnenhaus (stage house)—characterized by austere straight lines—from the auditorium, which sits beneath a striking concrete shell roof. Today it operates under the Theater Dortmund organisation.
