Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham, London, preserves the remnants of a Palladian villa built by architect John James in 1710 for politician and diplomat James Johnston. Named after Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who lodged there in the early nineteenth century, the original structure fell into decay and was largely demolished in 1926. What survives today—the Grade I listed baroque octagonal room designed by James Gibbs, its service wing, and a converted stable block—now operates as an art museum dedicated to works relating to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and its surrounding areas.
