On St George's Quay in Lancaster stands the Custom House, a Grade II* listed building designed by Richard Gillow of the prominent Gillow furniture family. Erected in 1764 for the Port Commissioners, this Palladian structure served its administrative purpose for over a century until the Customs office relocated to Barrow-in-Furness in 1882. The building now functions as a museum, preserving both its architectural heritage and local maritime history.
