Located at C.J. Hambros plass in downtown Oslo, the Oslo Courthouse is a postmodern structure completed in 1994 by architects Østgaard Arkitekter AS and Terje Grønmo for Norway's state building authority, Statsbygg. The granite-clad building houses the two Oslo District Courts—the tingrett, which handles civil and criminal cases, and the byfogdembete, which manages enforcement matters including marriages, bankruptcy, and probate. With 54 courtrooms and 11 adjudication rooms, the courthouse features an distinctive interior where the walls are inscribed with passages from the Norske Lov (Norwegian Laws), a conceptual choice that underscores the opacity of legal language to ordinary citizens.
