The Oslo Opera House, completed in 2008, is the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet and Norway's national opera house. Designed by Snøhetta in postmodern style, the building occupies a prominent position in the Bjørvika neighbourhood at the head of the Oslofjord. Its distinctive angled exterior surfaces are clad in Carrara marble and white granite, creating the effect of rising from the water. The structure encompasses 49,000 square metres across 1,100 rooms, with a main auditorium seating 1,364 and two additional performance spaces for 200 and 400 patrons. The main stage measures 16 metres wide and 40 metres deep. Operated by the Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property, it is the largest cultural building constructed in Norway since Nidaros Cathedral's completion around 1300, and is designated as cultural heritage.
