Oulu Cathedral is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in the center of Oulu, Finland, originally built in 1777 as a tribute to King Gustav III of Sweden and named after his wife, Sofia Magdalena. Constructed of brick in the Neoclassical style under the National Board of Public Building, the structure was largely destroyed in the devastating city fire of 1822. The renowned architect Carl Ludvig Engel designed its reconstruction atop the surviving stone walls, with restoration work completed in 1832, though the belfry was not added until 1845. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Diocese of Oulu and houses among its notable artworks a portrait of Johannes Messenius painted in 1611.
