The palaestra at Olympia was an ancient Greek wrestling school and training ground, constructed around the 3rd century BCE, where athletes prepared for competition in wrestling, boxing, and pancration—a no-holds-barred combat sport combining grappling, kicking, and punching. Following standard Greco-Roman architectural practice, the facility consisted of a hollow square plan with a roofed portico (peribolos) forming an inner border, surrounded by rooms facing inward; an outer ring of rooms, likely housing resident athletes-in-training, faced outward. The school maintained strict discipline through appointed umpires and judges who enforced rules, levied fines, and could bar serious violators. Today the site survives as archaeological ruins within Ancient Olympia Municipality in Greece.
