Palau Güell is a mansion in Barcelona's El Raval neighborhood designed by Antoni Gaudí for industrialist Eusebi Güell and completed in 1888. This masterpiece of Catalan modernism centers on an opulent entertaining space where horse-drawn carriages entered through striking wrought-iron gates crowned with a parabolic arch and adorned with forged ironwork evoking seaweed and whips, flanking a bronze phoenix symbolizing Catalonia's economic and cultural renaissance. The receiving room features ornate walls and ceilings concealing hidden viewing windows that allowed the owners to observe arriving guests from above before greeting them. The main party room's tall ceiling is pierced with small openings designed to suspend lanterns that created the illusion of a starlit sky, while a basement ramp led livestock to the servants' livery stable. After structural damage from weakened stone required closure in 2004, the building underwent comprehensive restoration and reopened in 2011. It is recognized as part of Gaudí's UNESCO World Heritage designation and remains a defining example of modernist domestic architecture.
