Parc de la Ciutadella, a 31-hectare urban park on the northeastern edge of Barcelona's Ciutat Vella, was created in the mid-19th century and for decades served as the city's only green space. Built in 1872 and designed in the Catalan modernism style, the grounds now encompass diverse attractions including the city zoo, the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya, a small lake, museums, and a monumental fountain designed by Josep Fontserè with possible contributions from the young Antoni Gaudí. Designated a Cultural Asset of National Interest, the park has held particular civic importance as the seat of Catalonia's parliament, a status that led to periodic closures during independence-related tensions in 2018 and 2019.
