Pepoli Turret
Erice, Italy

Exterior only
Visible from the street; the inside is private.
Perched in the medieval hilltop town of Erice, Sicily, the Pepoli Turret is a late-19th-century pavilion that embodies eclectic romanticism. Commissioned by Count Agostino Sieri Pepoli, a scholar and arts patron, the structure fuses neo-Gothic and Moorish revival styles with Art Nouveau flourishes—a synthesis typical of its era's aesthetic restlessness. Conceived as a private refuge for intellectual pursuits, the turret now serves a public function, housing an interactive museum and Peace Observatory that transforms Pepoli's original vision of contemplative retreat into a space for visitor engagement.
