Pigott Building
Hamilton, Canada
Exterior only
Visible from the street; the inside is private.
At 36 James Street South in downtown Hamilton, the 18-storey Pigott Building stands as a landmark blend of Art Deco and Gothic Revival styles. Completed in 1929 for $1,000,000 by architects Bernard and Fred Prack, it was Hamilton's first skyscraper and originally served as an office building. Rising 210 feet, it takes its name from the Pigott Construction Company, the firm that built it—a prolific contractor responsible for numerous significant Canadian structures, from McMaster University and Hamilton City Hall to the Skylon Tower at Niagara Falls. The building is now designated under the Ontario Heritage Act and has been converted to condominium use.
