Built in 1891 as a sector light for the Emshorn channel on Germany's North Sea coast, Pilsum Lighthouse stands 11 metres tall on a dyke near the village of Pilsum in Krummhörn, Lower Saxony. Constructed of cast iron and steel, the tower guided ships through the narrow waterway until 1915, when its light was extinguished during the First World War to prevent enemy navigation. After the conflict, the channel was relocated, rendering the lighthouse obsolete. Despite its brief operational life, Pilsum has become one of East Frisia's most recognizable symbols and is now protected as an architectural heritage monument.
